Host Question: Is there a difference between a nutrition science degree and a food science degree or would those just be semantics of words.
Guest Answer: I would say it’s more a different of focus. So you can get and I’m less familiar with the actual degree that you would get for a food science degree, but you could have an emphasis on food science. And those folks really would be more in like the research and development side of nutrition.
Guest Answer: And by that, I would mean like food technologists — Mhmm. — or food scientists that are working with food manufacturers and dealing with, like, shelf life of a product. So I do think that they’re very different roles with areas of emphasis in different areas. Nutrition is a base, but whether you go into food science or dietetics really leads to different career paths.
Guest Answer: A food science degree is going to focus more heavily on the manipulation and differences of the chemistry and biology of food products. Ways we can change and manipulate these to, you know, maybe change their appearance or their longevity or their preservation whereas a nutrition science degree is kind of more so working with individuals that are choosing to consume those foods.
Guest Answer: What I have is a food science and human nutrition degree. I don’t know necessarily. I think you can just get a food science degree, which would be heavily focused on the science of food and, like, culinary type of stuff, the chemical compositions of food, etcetera. And the nutrition science would be more of the human nutrition component, but I think a lot of programs kind of combine the two as well.
